creating safe, engaging outdoor spaces for youth support programs
At ADAWS (Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Service) in South Brisbane, the journey to recovery extends beyond the walls of the facility. This residential program, operated by the Mater Hospital, provides vital support for Queensland adolescents aged 13 to 19 who are ready to take control of their substance use and make positive life changes.
The outdoor environment plays a crucial role in fostering well-being, offering safe, engaging spaces where young people can connect, relax, and heal. Designed to encourage recreation and social interaction under the guidance of carers, the landscape creates a supportive and uplifting atmosphere.

transforming outdoor spaces into recovery zones
The landscape of this facility provides an important role in providing outdoor spaces for recreation. This allows users to congregate and socialise in a secure environment with carers.
The site includes a significant landscape component including:
- outdoor break out spaces for users
- recreational areas including a half sized basketball court
- deck areas and raised planters
- streetscape designed in accordance with Brisbane City Council streetscape requirements.
Citicene collaborated with BVN Architects to bring this vision to life, ensuring that the landscape is more than just an outdoor space – it’s a key part of the recovery journey.
