The University of Southern Queensland approved a $15 million upgrade to the Agricultural Science and Engineering Precinct on its Toowoomba Campus. The upgrades include new microbiology, quarantine and bio-security laboratories as well as controlled growing environments. 

sustainable landscape

An important landscape consideration for this project included the retention of numerous mature trees throughout the site. Other sustainable design principles included the reuse of existing site materials such as topsoil and mulch and control of storm-water overland flow adjacent to refurbished buildings. 

A native landscape character aids in ensuring a drought and frost tolerant landscape. The aim is to reduce the required maintenance.

practical solutions for the end user

Seating areas, entry nodes and new signage as well as additional planting areas adjoining and adjacent to buildings were all part of the proposed landscape. The refurbishment of existing car park landscape planting and streetscape frontage to the new laboratories were also part of the landscape scope.

swales

Stormwater swales are vegetated with native grasses and lined with river rock. Carparks are shaded with medium canopy shade trees.

Construction was undertaken by builders Wiley and Citicene were engaged to provide landscape architectural services including concept and detailed design for construction.
