designing L’oréal’s Queensland distribution centre to blend sustainability with functionality

L’Oréal has set ambitious, measurable targets for climate, water, biodiversity, and natural resources as part of their “L’Oréal for the Future” program, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality, reduce water consumption, and minimize environmental impact by 2030.

Goodman developed L’Oréal’s first Queensland purpose-built distribution centre at Redbank Estate, providing a state-of-the-art facility in Brisbane to support the company’s growth and meet customer demand.

integrating landscape with built form

The landscape design seamlessly integrates with the architectural character of the distribution centre, enhancing the facility’s functionality while fostering biodiversity and environmental harmony.

A network of inviting outdoor spaces encourages engagement with the natural surroundings. Recycled timber sleepers are repurposed as bespoke bench seating and landscape features, while decomposed granite surfaces, corten steel edging, and vegetable planters introduce a raw, organic materiality that aligns with L’Oréal’s sustainability ethos.

landscape resilience and biodiversity

The planting palette is carefully curated to support local biodiversity and climate resilience. Mature ex-ground Livistona palms (Livistona australis), along with a selection of shade trees, provide cooling relief and reinforce the subtropical character of the site. These elements establish a strong visual and ecological connection to the regional landscape while enhancing microclimatic comfort for employees and visitors.

a dynamic and engaging outdoor experience

A meandering footpath weaves through the landscape, promoting movement and a deeper connection with nature. Thoughtfully designed rest areas offer shaded pockets for relaxation and informal gatherings, enriching the daily experience of those working within the facility.

The use of freeform design lines, native planting, and organic finishes creates a naturalistic aesthetic that balances functionality with sustainability, setting a new benchmark for environmentally conscious industrial landscapes. Raised vegetable garden beds are seamlessly integrated into the landscaped area, offering employees an opportunity to engage with edible gardening and reconnect with natural food cycles. These productive green spaces not only enhance biodiversity but also promote workplace well-being by fostering a sense of community and sustainability.

end-to-end delivery – from concept to certification

Citicene delivered the landscape architecture for L’Oréal’s Queensland Distribution Centre from Schematic Design through to final certification, ensuring a seamless integration of sustainability and functionality.

Throughout the process, Citicene provided detailed design development, documentation, and construction oversight, ensuring the project’s vision was fully realized. A key feature of the design was the bespoke hardscape elements, including custom seating and landscape features crafted from recycled railway timber sleepers, repurposed to serve both functional and sculptural purposes.

These carefully considered details not only enhance the usability of outdoor spaces but also align with L’Oréal’s sustainability commitments, reinforcing the project’s environmentally responsible approach.
