refurbishing a unique architectural landmark
Demartini Fletcher has reimagined a distinctive architectural landmark in Toowoomba, seamlessly blending contemporary upgrades with the site’s original design. This refurbishment involved revitalizing an existing building along Herries Street while introducing a new office block at the rear, preserving the integrity of the original structure while enhancing functionality and visual appeal.
landscape design complementing architectural form
The landscape design plays a crucial role in reinforcing the building’s unique architectural expression. Advanced Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) were carefully selected to complement the site’s existing character while drawing inspiration from the neighbouring Saint Lukes Anglican Church, known for its mature Date Palms. These towering specimens create a dramatic contrast against the building’s clean, modern lines, adding a refined natural element to the revitalized space.

hardscape elements that elevate the design
The integration of hardscape elements further enhances the relationship between building and landscape. Pavement bands echo the distinctive ‘blade’ wall architectural features, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. Their striking contrast defines the forecourt, transforming it into an inviting and visually dynamic entry point.
Additional design features – including galvanized SHS screens, custom planters, and outdoor seating – add depth and function to the outdoor areas, creating comfortable and engaging spaces for employees and visitors alike.
a thoughtful fusion of old and new
This refurbishment balances respect for the building’s original architectural intent with a fresh, modern approach. Through a carefully considered landscape and hardscape strategy, the redevelopment enhances the aesthetic and functional qualities of the space, ensuring it remains a standout commercial destination in Toowoomba.
