practical eco-friendly landscape solutions
Developed by Spinks & Co and constructed by Hutchinson Builders, this highway service centre on the Bruce Highway at Benaraby, anchored by Caltex, features a range of retail outlets while embracing sustainable landscape solutions.
The design thoughtfully integrates native and indigenous plant species, establishing a seamless connection with the surrounding environment while enhancing ecological sustainability. The landscape’s strategic planting supports biodiversity, boosts habitat value, and fosters a sense of place.

Key sustainable features include a thoughtfully curated blend of grasses, sedges, overland flow paths, swales, and bio-filtration basins. These elements not only optimize stormwater management but also improve water quality, safeguarding the adjacent waterway for future generations.
An acoustically engineered vegetated buffer, incorporating a diverse range of upper, mid, and lower-storey plantings, provides an effective noise barrier. This natural buffer mitigates sound pollution, ensuring harmony between the service centre and nearby residential areas. The dense vegetation further amplifies acoustic benefits, balancing both environmental impact and human comfort.
Additional landscape features include clear sight-line safety and signage visual clearances, meeting the stringent Local Authority amenity requirements and ensuring a safe and visually cohesive environment.
