Whitewater World, developed by Ardent Leisure, was completed in record time with a construction value of approximately $60 million. Situated on Queensland’s iconic Gold Coast, this waterpark provides an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers and sun lovers alike, in a prime, high-energy environment.

Positioned strategically next to Dreamworld, Whitewater World offers visitors a vast array of exciting attractions, amplifying the adventure and choices available.

Whitewater World

landscape masterplanning and design approach

The design of Whitewater World began with a comprehensive landscape character study and a detailed Masterplan that identified distinct precincts and landscape treatments. These treatments were carefully designed to complement the park’s immersive architecture and thrilling rides.

The landscape design reflects the park’s vibrant culture and coastal context, with thoughtful species selection and strategic placement that enhances the theme and guest experience.

key landscape elements

A variety of landscape elements were incorporated to enrich the park’s atmosphere and create a dynamic visitor experience. Feature entry palm bosques were strategically placed to draw visitors towards the park’s centerpiece, the wave pool, establishing a striking first impression. Large shade trees were introduced to provide gathering spaces for patrons, encouraging relaxation and social interaction.

Custom-coloured and patterned pavements were designed to merge with the waterpark’s theme, adding visual interest while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding environment. In addition, decorative and buffer plantings were carefully selected to enhance the ambiance, offering privacy and improving the overall visitor experience.

landscape architectural expertise

Citicene participated in the early design phases of the project, providing preliminary masterplanning and site structuring ideas. Our landscape architectural expertise guided the design and development process through to certification and completion.

We provided a full range of landscape architectural services, including landscape masterplanning, schematic design, authority approvals, and design development. We also managed contract documentation and administration, overseeing the construction process to ensure design integrity and quality throughout.

detailed design and documentation

The detailed design and documentation phase involved creating in-depth plans for the park’s ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ landscape works, ensuring functional and aesthetic alignment with the overall theme. This included the design of access points to themed rides, ensuring smooth flow and accessibility for guests. Special attention was given to the creation of corrals for rides, which were carefully integrated into the landscape, ensuring both safety and visual cohesion with the surrounding environment.

The pavement design was another component, with a strong emphasis on creating visually compelling, durable surfaces that complemented the waterpark’s design. The entry forecourt was designed to be an inviting space, guiding visitors into the park while enhancing the overall arrival experience. Landscape buffering and screening were strategically implemented to minimize visual impacts from the adjoining motorway, maintaining the park’s immersive atmosphere.

Cost estimation was a key part of this process, ensuring that the design was executed within budget while meeting the project’s high standards. Full contract administration services were provided through the construction phase, with close supervision to ensure the integrity of the design and quality of the final landscape outcomes.

“WhiteWater World was a complex project from start to finish, and designed and constructed under an extremely short timeframe. Landscape Architecture was delivered by Citicene and completed with great results.”
