enhancing employee accommodation in harsh outback conditions

Fluor Mining Camp is a well-equipped accommodation village situated near Roma in Queensland, designed to provide a comfortable and practical living environment for employees working on nearby projects. The camp serves as a ‘home away from home,’ ensuring that workers have access to essential amenities and recreational spaces during their stay.

To support the well-being of residents, the camp offers a comprehensive range of facilities, including a fully equipped dining area, kitchen, and recreational spaces where employees can relax after a long day. Additional amenities include an office and reception area, laundry facilities, a first aid station, a gym, a dedicated site office, and locker rooms. Essential infrastructure such as internal roads, car parks, and well-maintained accommodation units ensure smooth day-to-day operations.

Fluor Mining Camp

landscape design for harsh outback conditions

The landscape design for Fluor Mining Camp was carefully planned to enhance the overall environment while remaining cost-effective and suited to the challenging outback climate. Given the remote location, plant selection was a critical factor, requiring species that could withstand extreme temperatures, limited water availability, and low maintenance requirements.

Priority was given to recreational and pedestrian areas, ensuring they were both functional and comfortable for employees. Special attention was placed on providing adequate shade, an essential feature for creating cooler outdoor spaces in the hot climate. The result is a well-balanced landscape that enhances the camp’s liveability while maintaining resilience in the rugged conditions of Queensland’s outback.
