ipswich streetscape enhancement project

Ipswich City Council embarked on a streetscape enhancement initiative aimed at improving key urban areas across the city. This project aimed to create more attractive, functional, and sustainable streetscapes that reflect Ipswich’s identity while supporting future growth.

Through a strategic assessment and design approach, Citicene was engaged to review, plan, and propose upgrades to key precincts, ensuring each streetscape met the needs of the community and aligned with best-practice urban design principles.

The project focused on revitalizing entry points, shopping strips, primary thoroughfares, and arterial roadways across Ipswich. By integrating high-quality landscaping, pedestrian-friendly spaces, and functional urban infrastructure, the streetscape upgrades aimed to enhance the city’s public realm, improve safety, and support local economic activity.

The Value of Well-Designed Streetscapes

Streetscapes are a fundamental component of urban environments. They serve as the backbone of a city, shaping the spaces where people live, work, and interact. Well-designed streetscapes contribute to the overall character of a city and provide both social and economic benefits.

Investing in high-quality streetscapes enhances environmental sustainability by incorporating thoughtful vegetation and storm water management. It also improves community well-being by creating inviting, pedestrian-friendly spaces while stimulating economic activity by supporting local businesses and increasing property values. While upgrading streetscapes requires careful planning and investment, the long-term benefits significantly outweigh the initial costs.

Ipswich City Council Streetscape Vision

Ipswich City Council’s streetscape vision is to promote an attractive Ipswich, promote diversity and character, respect the environment and enhance the urban context.

Ipswich City Council’s streetscape vision focuses on enhancing Ipswich’s urban identity through high-quality streetscape improvements. It aims to promote diversity and character, respect the environment, and improve connectivity and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. To achieve this, the Ipswich Streetscape Initiative was developed to assess and upgrade key urban areas across the city.

As part of this initiative, Citicene was engaged to assess existing streetscapes, develop a design strategy tailored to each precinct’s local character, and propose upgrades that align with community needs and environmental considerations. The landscape character of each area was carefully studied, taking into account the local built form, historical context, existing vegetation, and the functional needs of businesses and residents.

Proposed landscape treatments included the addition of street trees and greenery to enhance aesthetics and provide shade, the installation of street furniture and feature pavements to improve usability, and the development of pocket park enhancements to create welcoming community spaces. Other urban elements, such as flagpoles and wayfinding signage, were also incorporated to improve the overall experience.

Additionally, certain precincts required adherence to Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) guidelines, ensuring appropriate vegetation setbacks for sightlines and safety zones.

completed streetscape projects

Streetscape upgrades were successfully implemented in key locations across Ipswich, including:

  • Brisbane Road in Bundamba
  • Carole Park, Haigslea
  • Kruger Parade
  • Mount Crosby Road
  • and Warwick Road.

For each site, Citicene delivered concepts, schematic designs, and strategic recommendations to create vibrant, functional, and enduring streetscapes that support the needs of the local community.

Ipswich’s streetscape improvements are a testament to the power of well-planned urban design. By considering safety, environmental sustainability, and community needs, these projects have transformed public spaces into valuable assets for residents and businesses alike.
